Nishapur County locates in Razavi Province in north east of Iran and
accommodate about half a millions population. One of the most famous
person in the history of Nishapur is Omar Khayyam. Khayyam was a Persian
polymath, philosopher, mathematician, astronomer and of course a poet.
He also wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, mineralogy, music and
Islamic theology. Outside Iran and Persian speaking countries, Khayyam
has had an impact on literature and societies and the most influential
of all was Edward FitzGerald, who made him the most famous poet by
translating his Rubaiyat. Here is one of Khayyam verses:
Oh, come with old Khayyam, and leave the Wise
To talk; one thing is certain, that Life flies;
One thing is certain, and the Rest is Lies;
The Flower that once has blown forever dies.
There’s also another famous Persian Muslim poet better known by his name
Attar of Nishapur. He was indeed theoretician of Sufism and
Hagiographer from Nishapur who had an immense and lasting influence on
Persian poetry and Sufism.
